Swedish Massage

There are many types of massage practiced by professional massage therapists.  By far the most common and popular is the Swedish massage, sometimes called relaxation massage or traditional massage. It was introduced to the U.S. in 1858 as the Swedish Movement Cure.

Swedish massage techniques are used as a foundation in most massage therapies and are used by most massage therapists.  It is the working of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue using various techniques to enhance function, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being.  It involves soft, long, kneading strokes, as well as light, rhythmic, tapping strokes, on topmost layers of muscles. This is also combined with movement of the joints. By relieving muscle tension, Swedish massage therapy can be both relaxing and energizing.

What will happen during a massage session?
You will be asked a few questions regarding your general health. Any specific concerns that you would like addressed during your session should be discussed at this time. Your therapist will step out of the room so you can undress. Many clients leave their undershorts/panties on and remove everything else. It is totally appropriate to remove all of your clothes before crawling under the sheet and blanket. You will always be draped with the sheet except for the area that is being massaged. The office of Natural Harmony Massage is a very safe environment for you. A strict code of professional ethics is followed.

Your session will usually begin face down (prone) with your face in a specially designed face cradle. A bolster will be put under your ankles to relieve pressure on the low back. Arms are usually placed at your side under the sheet/blanket. Gentle rocking and stretches are often used to investigate any "holding patterns" or tension. This is a good opportunity for you to breathe deeply and let go of any tension in your mind, body or spirit. Massage oil or cream are used with various strokes to warm up and work the muscle tissue, releasing tension and breaking up muscle "knots" or adhered tissues, called adhesions. Approximately half way through the session, you will be asked to scoot or slide down all the way onto the table and turn over onto your back. A bolster will be put under your knees to help alleviate any low back tension.  The same techniques used on your back side will be used again, with some additional stretches as needed. Most massage sessions are completed with gentle face and scalp massage.

Every massage is different. Every person is different and has different needs. No two massages are exactly alike. No two massage therapists are exactly alike.  Everyone has their own style even though the basic techniques of Swedish massage being used are the same.
